Am Freitag, 10. Oktober 2014 feierte die letzte deutsche Kunstturn-Olympiasiegerin in ihrer Schweizer Wahlheimat ihren 50. Geburtstag.
Im Berliner Stadtteil „Prenzlauer Berg“ wuchs sie auf. Mit fünf Jahren nahm Ihre Mutter sie mit zum Turnen, wo sie mit acht Jahren ihre ersten Medaillen bei der Kreisspartakiade gewann.
In den achtziger Jahren holte Maxi Gnauck dreimal nacheinander den Weltmeistertitel am Stufenbarren und war fünfmal Europameisterin.
Sie gewann sechs Jahre in Folge (1979-1985) die Goldmedaille am Stufenbarren, was bis dahin keiner Kunstturnerin gelungen war und blieb in ihrer aktiven Zeit die ungeschlagene Königin zwischen oberem und unterem Holm.
Im Jahre 2000 wurde sie als erste deutsche Turnerin in die “International Gymnastics Hall of Fame” des Kunstturnens (Oklahoma-City, USA) aufgenommen.
Seit dem Ende ihrer Karriere arbeitet “Mini-Maxi”, wie sie als Aktive genannt wurde, als Trainerin, zunächst in Berlin, später in Schleswig-Holstein und seit 2005 in der Schweiz.
Im Turnzentrum Emme/Schweiz, wo sie derzeit beschäftigt ist, feierte Maxi Gnauck ihren 50. Geburtstag.
